Hungry Bone Syndrome Diet

Hungry Bone Syndrome – Disease Definition, Description & Treatment

Hungry bone syndrome is a case of hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) after surgery for hyperparathyroidism (excess parathyroid hormone in blood levels) in patients with a severe prolonged disease (secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism in renal failure).

Serum calcium is rapidly deposited into the bone causing blood levels of free calcium to drop. Hungry bone syndrome is also rarely seen after correction of longstanding metabolic acidosis or after thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism.
